DAY 1 – ARRIVAL AT MALAMALA
After an initial briefing there’s time to acquaint yourself with the breathtaking environment of MalaMala before joining fellow guests and guides for lunch in the air-conditioned dining room or on the open safari deck.
Following lunch, we make our way into the bush for our first encounters with MalaMala’s rich variety of wildlife. It’s not unusual to spot all of the Big 5 in this first afternoon and, fortunately, our photography guide will be on hand to help with camera settings and composition to ensure you’re ready to capture those iconic moments. During the late afternoon we make a stop to enjoy cool drinks and snacks as the fiery African sun descends. Upon returning to the lodge, there’s time to reflect on the day over a delicious meal.
DAY 2 & 3 – GAME VIEWING
Warm drinks and a light breakfast arrive each morning as dawn breaks over MalaMala and we head out on our morning game drive in search of more big game.
Returning to camp a hearty breakfast awaits, followed by time at leisure to take advantage of the extensive facilities at MalaMala. Relax with a book in the lounge, take a dip in the pool or, for the more energetic, join a bush walk with a ranger. Our photographer is also on hand for any advice or tips with capturing and editing images.
Following lunch, we head out once more on our afternoon game drive. Whilst MalaMala is world-renowned for lion and leopard sightings, the landscape itself is also magnificent and a real pleasure to traverse with a small and intimate group of companions.
Following sundowners in the bush we return to camp for an exquisite meal served in a reed-enclosed boma, under an ancient jackal berry tree, or, when the weather permits, on the safari deck among myriad twinkling candles, overlooking the Sand River.
DAY 4 – FINAL SAFARI & DEPARTURE
The final early start before we bid farewell to one another. Soak in this exceptional environment and say goodbye to the big cats before departing MalaMala Reserve.
ABOUT YOUR GUIDE: VILLIERS STEYN
Villiers has been leading photographic safaris since 2009, but his love for nature and wildlife in particular started as a toddler. When he would visit the Kruger National Park with his family during the holidays. After school he studied nature conservation and he had the privilege of studying leopard movements in Botswana’s Mashatu Game Reserve for four years as part of his masters degree. After that, he spent nearly a decade crisscrossing the African continent as a travel writer, visiting some of its wildest and most beautiful national parks and game reserves. His photographic guiding career started in his home away from home, Mashatu, and expanded to the Sabi Sands when he and his wife moved to the lowveld town of Hoedspruit in November 2013. Since then, he has frequently lead photo safaris to amazing destinations like Mala Mala, Elephant Plains and Djuma, but he has also taken guests further afield to more remote places like Northern Botswana, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and even the jungles of india. Most recently, Villiers started a YouTube channel called the Safari Expert, on which he shares a host of safari-related videos.
